In this introductory class you will learn the basic use of bookbinding tools and materials, along with bookbinding structures. Students will learn about non-adhesive structures, bindings for single sheets, and other bindings that can be made with little specialized equipment. Accordion books, concertinas, pamphlets, butterfly books are a few of the structures that will be taught during the course.
This class is ideal for those who wish to learn simple forms for presenting work, or for building fundamental knowledge of bookbinding.
About the Instructor:
Sarah is a bookbinder, printmaker, basket weaver living in Brooklyn. She graduated Parsons in 2012 with a BFA. She is an assistant printer at Harlan & Weaver and teaches bookmaking at The Center for Book Arts. You can find her writings about bookmaking in Bookforms, A Complete Guide to Designing and Crafting Hand-Bound Books published by Rockport Publishing and the Center for Book Arts in 2019. She specializes in custom structures and enclosures.
